- Ma Kirk said, "Sit down, or go pick on somebody your own size."
- Lil snorted. "And where's that, Smarty?"
- Lil tossed her head. "Well neither do they."
- Ma Kirk said stiffly, "Which way are they coming?"
- Kirk pointed. "From the west. Piruts, I think."
- He said, "Wonder how they got so close, so fast?"
- He said, "Jakk, I'll get the sawbones...."
- Kirk laid the body carefully on the stones and got up. "Yeah."
- He said, "Pa."
- Wes raised his head slowly. "I don't understand."
- The Officer's voice said dully, "No discipline. Better take him home."
- Kirk said slowly, "Jakk's dead. He was my friend, and he didn't lie."
- She asked, "Then you won't believe, and you won't stop talking?"
- She brought her head up. "You're going _back_?"
- He said roughly, "Get up."
- The girl said between her teeth, "We can't make it."
- Somebody called cheerfully, "You might as well come down now."
- He said, "Let us go. We haven't anything to steal."
- He went back to Samel. "It's there. Come on."
- Kirk whispered, "What are 'power' and 'gold'?"
- Kirk cried, "That's a lie!"
- The Captain looked at him. "Tell your friends to go and search."
- Kirk said humbly, "I'm sorry."
- Samel shook his head. "We had to eat and hunt for heat-stones, too."
- He said, "Do you still hate me?"
- She tossed her head. "I didn't."
