LATHES OF KENT.

"The county of Kent [England] is divided into six 'lathes,' of

nearly equal size, having the jurisdiction of the hundreds in

other shires. The lathe may be derived from the Jutish

'lething' (in modern Danish 'leding')—a military levy."
