La vieja is a very strange fish, for its whole body is covered with a
strong shell, or horny bark, which would resist even a knife. Hence,
when caught it is laid on live coals, together with the shell, and eaten
roasted in this manner. It is very seldom taken with a hook, and rarely
weighs more than a pound.
