共 68 题- CITADEL OF THE GREEN DEATH
- BY EMMETT McDOWELL
- Joel came to a dead stop. "Who are you?"
- SUPPER--PRESS BUTTON.
- She said, "Yes?"
- Joel hesitated. "A good condensed history then."
- She said, "Flagg's _Stellar Venture_ is the latest...."
- II
- In spite of his eagerness Joel felt a vague shock. "But that's slavery."
- III
- IV
- Thorp climbed down. "You can get up now."
- Liedl said triumphantly: "Nothing could! _Nothing but plants!_"
- Captain Goplerud said, "It's no use. They're tight-mouthed as clams."
- Mullin cursed, then he said, "Get this man to the hospital."
- For a moment there was silence. Then a prisoner asked, "What happened?"
- Mister Mullin shouted, "Speak when you're spoken to!"
- Priscilla said sweetly, "I'll buy him at public auction."
- Joel said, "I thought you must have gone to sleep."
- Joel stared at her narrow eyes. "But...."
- Joel said, "I don't see...."
- He let his breath escape. "How did you do that?"
- VI
- Tamis said suddenly, "We can't leave him there!"
- He picked up the body like a limp sack of potatoes. "Open the chute."
- Joel said dryly: "Well--what's stopping you?"
- Thorp said, low-voiced, "Watch him. Don't ever let him get behind you."
- Joel frowned. "What do you mean?"
- Joel was shocked. "I'm not a murderer!"
- He looked incredulous. "Why not? Don't they like your flavor?"
- VII
- Joel glanced about swiftly. "No."
- She looked relieved. "The Thinkers will contact you."
- The colonel reached the D's. Then he said, "Eriss."
- Thorp said, "Good riddance."
- Roos' face hardened. "Do what Miss Cameron says!"
- VIII
- Joel looked startled. "What is she? A lady Bluebeard?"
- Peg pushed aside the crystal doors. "Here he is, Miss Cameron."
- The machine went "_Glug--glug--bubble--glug_--"
- It said: "_My Lord, it's reading my thoughts!_"
- Priscilla lifted her eyes, asked, "Have the rebels contacted you?"
- The machine said: "_That damned machine will give me away._"
- The machine said: "_What's the use of lying?_"
- Joel said, "Priscilla, why did you buy me?"
- IX
- He laughed shortly. "I might as well be a piece of furniture."
- Tamis began to grow red. "I--I was watching out for him."
- She giggled. "You could call it that."
- He said, "That's preposterous...."
- Joel grinned crookedly. "Well?"
- Priscilla's green eyes were alight. "Why, Joel, you're jealous!"
- A woman with claret hair said, "It's what is about to happen!"
- Joel's green eyes narrowed. "Then what are you afraid of?"
- Fredrik Roos said, "I'm afraid he's quite right."
- Roos turned a blanched face toward them. "They've cut the power!"
- The guard said, "Our officers are having a talk with the rebels."
- The man reached him, said, "Who are you?"
- Someone prodded him roughly with a toe, said, "Get up!"
- Eriss looked startled, roared, "What are you talking about?"
- A voice said, "You're safe now, my son."
- Joel asked, "You--you relayed my message to the Thinkers?"
- XI
- He frowned. "Nigel trees!"
- Tamis said, "Shhh."
- Tamis touched his shoulder. "The Thinkers are expressing their thanks."
- Joel said savagely, "Tie him up."
- Thorp called, "What is it, Joel?"
