‘The Twilight of the Gods’ has always attracted the praise and
admiration of the discriminating, and its author, the well-remembered
scholar and Keeper of Printed Books at the British Museum, is often
referred to as ‘The English Anatole France.’ This book has indeed
much of the French master’s scholarship and irony, but it has also
an unmistakable flavour of its own which makes it in its own way a
classic. The present edition has a striking Introduction by T. E.
Lawrence, of ‘Arabia’ fame, and is illustrated by a young artist of
real originality.
