I publish, therefore, these Letters with the design of giving salutary

warning. He who, having been thus warned, will not listen to advice,

will perish dreadfully, but not through my fault. May Jesus Christ give

us the spirit of prayer, and grant to those who are called to direct

this Council, to seek first the things which are of God, and to neglect

and undervalue those which concern themselves.

FOOTNOTE:

[167] This Treatise, approved of by the Archbishop Sbinks, is as early

as the year 1404 or 1405. It was written before John Huss had been

denounced or persecuted by the clergy.

PRINTED BY NEILL AND COMPANY, EDINBURGH.

WORKS PUBLISHED BY W. WHYTE & CO.

New Edition, greatly enlarged, in three vols., foolscap 8vo, Price One

Guinea,

EXPOSITION OF THE EPISTLE TO THE ROMANS.

By ROBERT HALDANE, Esq.

“In ingenuity, it is equal to Turrestne; in theological accuracy,

superior. Equally sound with Brown of Wamphray, it has none of its

wearisomeness. It is, at least, as judicious as Scott, and more

terse, pointed, and discursive. The only Commentary on Romans that we

have read which it does not excel, is that of Calvin.... Calvin and

Haldane stand alone--the possessors, as expositors of this Epistle,

of nearly equal honours.”--_Presbyterian Review._

THE EVIDENCE AND AUTHORITY OF DIVINE REVELATION;

BEING A VIEW OF THE TESTIMONY OF THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS TO THE

MESSIAH, WITH THE SUBSEQUENT TESTIMONIES.

Two vols., Third Edition, Price 12s. cloth.

“The work before us presents the evidence of revelation in a very

full, vivid, and interesting manner. One great excellence of this

work is, that the subject is treated in such a manner, that the

alleged proof is not only evidence of revelation, but evidence and

illustration of the distinguishing doctrines of grace.”--_Dublin

Examiner._

By the same Author, Price 3s. 6d., 12mo, cloth,

THE DOCTRINE OF THE ATONEMENT, WITH STRICTURES ON THE RECENT

PUBLICATIONS OF DRS WARDLAW AND JENKYN ON THE SUBJECT.

“The author is quite at home in the discussion. He has studied the

question by the light of the Bible, and not in the Spirit of party;

and we think his conclusions fitted to accomplish the object he has

in view,--the prevention of, or the restoration from, error, on this

momentous doctrine.”--_Edinburgh Advertiser._

“For a clear, a distinct, and most able treatment of the question of

the Atonement, we must say we have seldom met with a work more worthy

of general attention.”--_Christian Examiner._

ELEMENTS OF SACRED TRUTH FOR THE YOUNG.

By JOHN ABERCROMBIE, M.D.,

Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh, &c.

+Part I.+

“The learned Doctor has fulfilled his self-imposed task in a manner

which reflects great credit upon him; and his little work can hardly

fail to be extensively useful, since it is lucidly written, simple in

its arrangement, and pervaded with a warm current of mingled piety

and philanthropy.”--_Derbyshire Courier._

“This little book, intended chiefly for the young, is marked with

that clearness and depth of reasoning which characterize all the

writings of the late Dr Abercrombie. Nor is the pious feeling with

which the work is imbued less worthy of attention. As a publication

likely to be eminently beneficial, we heartily recommend it.”--_The

Atlas._

THE CULTURE AND DISCIPLINE OF THE MIND:

ADDRESSED TO THE YOUNG.

“We by no means overrate the merits of this Address when we say,

young engaged in liberal studies, than to put a copy of this earnest,

impressive, and most judicious Address into their hands.”--_Christian

Instructor._

Twenty-Third Thousand, in 18mo, price 1s. 6d.,

THE HARMONY OF CHRISTIAN FAITH AND CHRISTIAN CHARACTER.

“These tracts, as proceeding from an elder of our Church, reflect

the highest honour on Dr Abercrombie. It is beautiful to see an

individual of his professional celebrity thus coming out of his

sphere, and dedicating his talents and a portion of his time to the

religious instruction of the poor. Such an example is above all

praise.”--_Christian Instructor._

“We take leave of Jane Bouverie, and recommend her affecting

autobiography to all who admire the feminine loveliness of a

good and graceful woman, sketched without exaggeration, without

formality, and simply as represented in the portraiture of every-day

life.”--_Edinburgh Advertiser._
