This is an historical tale. "My Mistress the Queen" is Mary, daughter
of James II., into whose service the narrator, a girl of 16, enters
just before the marriage of Mary to William III. The descriptions are
graphic, and the views of historic personages and of manners at the
courts of Charles II. and William III. accurate and life-like. The
language is simple, and imitative of the quaint quiet style of that
period.
