SOME PRESS OPINIONS

unreservedly commended to the attention of student and expert, while

by her clear style and excellent English the needs of the music

lover, to whom the colour, the sincere emotion, and strong human

element of Tchaikovski's music will make a very strong appeal, are

met."--_Standard._

"A most illuminating commentary on Tchaikovski's music."--_Times._

=CÉSAR FRANCK: A STUDY.=

Translated from the French of Vincent d'Indy.

With an Introduction by ROSA NEWMARCH.

_Demy 8vo (9x5-3/4 inches), 7s. 6d. net_. _Postage 5d. extra._

There is no purer influence in modern music than that of César Franck,

for many years ignored in every capacity save that of organist of

Sainte-Clotilde, in Paris, but now recognised as the legitimate

successor of Bach and Beethoven. His inspiration, "rooted in love and

faith," has contributed in a remarkable degree to the regeneration

of the musical art in France and elsewhere. The now famous "Schola

Cantorum," founded in Paris in 1896, by A. Guilmant, Charles Bordes,

and Vincent d'Indy, is the direct outcome of his influence. Among the

artists who were in some sort his disciples were Paul Dukas, Chabrier,

Gabriel Fauré, and the great violinist Ysäye. His pupils include such

gifted composers as Benoît, Augusta Holmès, Chausson, Ropartz, and

d'Indy. This book, written with the devotion of a disciple and the

authority of a master, leaves us with a vivid and touching impression

of the saint-like composer of "The Beatitudes."

_Demy 8vo._ _7s. 6d. net_. _Second Edition._ _Postage 5d. extra._

"On almost every page there are sentences which might well be committed

to memory."--_Times._

"The book is a valuable and stimulating contribution to musical

æsthetics: it is animated throughout by a lofty conception of the

responsibilities of the artist and it enforces with spirit and with

eloquence the sound and wholesome doctrine that the vitalising element

of song is thought."--_Spectator._

Interest in the life and in the music of Edward Macdowell, now

generally regarded as the greatest composer America has produced, has

increased steadily since his untimely death. This work is an extensive

biographical and critical study of Macdowell by Lawrence Gilman, whose

sympathetic comprehension of the composer's art was evidenced in his

short monograph, in the Living Masters of Music series, published a

few years ago. The new book is based upon the previous study, but it

has been completely revised and enlarged by the addition of abundant

new material.
