One day a dog named Jip went for a walk. He came to a yard where there
was a hen with her brood of chicks. Said Jip to himself, “A downy little
yellow chick would make a sweet dinner for a dog. I think I’ll have it.”
He turned in at the gate. But Mother Hen had something to say about it.
“Cluck, cluck,” she cried to her chicks, and spread out her wings to
hide them. Then she lowered her head, stuck out her sharp beak, and made
straight for Jip. He turned tail and fled home as fast as his legs would
carry him.
