In the closing paragraph of his article Mr. Cleveland compliments his
administration upon having cleared the way “which shall hereafter guide
our nation safely and surely in the exercise of its functions which
represent the people’s trust.” The word “people’s” is not only
superfluous but mischievous and fatal to the truth. Omit that and the
ex-President’s statement will not be challenged.
